Why should you listen to me?

To understand the future of retail, you have to understand how we got here. I have 20 years of experience in ecommerce, which informs my point of view for the future of retail.

In 1996, I worked on Shopper’s Advantage and NetMarket, early ecommerce pioneers.

In 1998, I worked for VarsityBooks.com, an online textbook retailer which competed against the campus bookstore incumbents. Bricks vs. Clicks 1.0.

In 2005, I started ComparisonEngines, a blog which turned me into an analyst for the ecommerce industry. At its peak, ComparisonEngines was read by 35,000 people each month.

I then co-founded SingleFeed, which helped hundreds of retailers grow their businesses through working with shopping engines and marketplaces. During this time, I was able to meet leading retailers as well as search and marketplace behemoths like Google and Amazon to discuss the future of retail. I had the privilege of speaking at conferences such as IRCE, Shop.org, eTail, and Dreamforce.

In 2011, I worked with Kontagent, now Upsight, to help the mobile gaming analytics business attack new markets. Seeing how gaming companies leveraged mobile apps and user analytics was eye-opening. This is when I really started to understand the opportunities for retail apps as well as the challenges ahead.

In 2014, I briefly worked at Poshmark, a mobile marketplace for women. Poshmark’s app is consistently a top 20 free iPhone app.

I’m a data driven operator who lives, eats, and breathes ecommerce and marketing. This means I spend an inordinate amount of time listening to retailer earnings calls, reading 10-Qs, 10-Ks, and S-1s, downloading and using the top shopping apps, talking with leading VCs to understand their take on the market, and working with leading retailers to help them drive their growth.

I’ll make predictions, and I’ll get some wrong, but I’ll paint a picture of the future of retail that you as an investor or retailer can’t ignore.
